Review of Mission: Impossible III (2006) by Jerry F — 17 Jan 2015
These films seem to get better and better as they go along. This installment is slicker, faster-paced, and genuinely entertaining. There's banter, tension, excitement, plot twists; in short, everything needed for a great action film.
The script is great, a fantastic offering from Orci and Kurtzman. It does do the 'begin with a tense scene, then rewind several days' trick, which does mess up the plot order, but every part of this film pulls its weight. The action scenes get you excited, and the slower scenes really set up the character's motivations.
The acting is also enjoyable. Tom Cruise continues to entertain as Ethan Hunt, and the rest of his team (Rhames, Rhys Meyers, Q) play together nicely. Philip Seymour Hoffman is a good villain, and Billy Crudup and Laurence Fishburne are great as IMF support (although I'm obviously more partial to Fishburne here).
J.J. Abrams and his team deserve credit here. This is how you make a spy action film.
