"M:I3" really feels like a dry run for the template that would craft the finest superhero movie of all time in "The Dark Knight Rises". Seriously. So many elements of the films are nearly identical: themes of terrorism, questions of means, threats to the loved ones of heroes, etc.

Even setpieces are nearly identical: both films have interrogation/torture of the villain scenes, armored car ambush sequences, and Asian city basejump heists. J.J. Abrams provides excellent, brutal direction, making you feel the weight and gravity of the action.

An early helicopter pursuit is a high point action sequence of the series and packs a surprising emotional punch. Serving as a more sensible sequel to the first film, "3" scratches the surface on some fascinating questions, and is quite daring for a franchise vehicle in its brutality.

The examination of how Ethan Hunt's character must cope with family life in his position is a fascinating angle, and allows Tom Cruise to really flex his acting chops along with the action. A unique visual style, phenomenal action and a solid story overcome some tonal inconsistencies.

"The Dark Knight" would ramp up the exploration of America's terrorist anxieties, but this is a fascinating film to consider on its own merits and in light of Nolan's trilogy. Both reflect trauma at the heart of the American psyche: evil men who suddenly strike at the seemingly most innocent: our families.
