Review of Mission: Impossible II (2000) by Mace R — 04 May 2013
The first Mission Impossible was a confused wreck. Purists can say it was meant to be a thriller, and hey, good for you, but I think the average Joe found it all a bit convoluted, and a midge boring.
Mission Impossible 2 kind of starts that way, but at least this time, the plot is cut and dry. Stop the terrorist who wants to infect the world with a virus and then make billions off the cure. No backstabs, no turned tables (except for some latex masks), just straight up good v. evil.
The action part of this movie takes a while to kick in, but when it does, it is John Woo at his finest, with epic gun battles, car chases, and of course EXPLOOOOOOOOOSIONS!
I think the best comparison for me is the original Alien v. Aliens. The 1st movie was great and was a thinking man's sci-fi/horror. The second movie was also great and was an action packed movie. The Mission Impossible series does it up the same exact way.
