Stylish action movie that feels more like a John Woo film with a Mission Impossible label slapped on, as a result leaving a mess. Tom Cruise once again shows he's a capable action star and could do a real John Woo film if he wanted to, but still hadn't found the character of Ethan Hunt.

The rest of the cast is mostly wasted, though Thandie Newton is sophisticatedly sexy as the thief/love interest. Behind the camera, Woo does deliver some stylish set pieces but are more pretty than thrilling, and none of the emotional depth of his previous works.

He wastes the potential of the dynamic between Hunt and Sean (an overacting Dougray Scott), along with the love triangle between them. The film also has none of the trademark schemes that evolve the tension and team work of the later films, just a bunch of shooting and explosions.

Overall, a fun watch to catch on streaming or TV, but the low point of the Mission Impossible franchise.
