Review of Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018) by Ihateeverymovie — 29 Jul 2018

The thing about Avengers 3 is that, while still a bad movie, the fan theories managed to make it more enjoyable. So I'm going to present my own fan theory about this other bad movie, Mission: Impossible - Fallout. First we're going to have a look at an excellent HBO show, a show with good writing and storytelling (things that Mission: Impossible - Fallout doesn't have).

No, I am not talking about Game of Thrones, a show that went to complete **** after Season 2.

No, I am not talking about The Wire. The Wire has about 2.5 good seasons out of 5. Season 1 and 2 are excellent, Hamsterdam was cool, the storyline of the 4 kids in school was cool, but I can't say that I care about Carcetti's political career, or the general ruthlessness of Marlo, Chris and Snoop, or the newspaper people.

I am talking about The Sopranos, specifically, the episode Proshai, Livushka, in which Tony Soprano's kids, Meadow and AJ, discuss a Robert Frost poem. "White means death." "I thought black meant death." "Also white".

(THE SOPRANOS SPOILERS FOLLOWS).

Well, at the end of Mission: Impossible - Fallout, the screen cuts to white for a few seconds (not unlike The Sopranos cutting to black in the series finale) just before Tom Cruise seemingly prevents the atomic bomb from exploding. Here's the thing, the bomb did explode, Tom Cruise survived, and everything after the white screen is just a happy ending envisioned or dreamed by Tom Cruise. Remember that Tom Cruise had at least 2 visions in this movie.

So to conclude, Mission: Impossible - Fallout is a boring, generic action movie where in some scenes, things aren't that they seem, and that includes the ending, which may or may not have "happened". I mean, the movie's subtitle is "Fallout". Are you telling me a nuclear apocalypse DIDN'T happen? And to further conclude, the parachute scene was cool, the kidnapping and chase in Paris was cool, but again, and again, and again, cool action sequences are not enough to make a movie good.

And the bigger picture conclusion is that fan enthusiasm can make movies more interesting and dare I say, enjoyable. Fans catch things that non-fans such as myself don't and help to see things from a different perspective. The one exception is John Wick. No amount of fan enthusiasm will convince me that John Wick is in any way, shape, or form a good movie. "The perfect role for Keanu Reeves!" Are you kidding me? Any person you pick off of the street could play John Wick. He has 2 lines in the entire movie and for the rest of it he's just running and shooting people. If I want running and shooting, I'll watch myself playing playing video games. For movies, I'll go for story, tension, drama, and humor thank you very much.
