Review of Mission: Impossible (1996) by Matthew A — 28 Dec 2011
Brian De Palma has all the elements in place for a good spy thriller: an excellent cast, a good score, European ambience, and terrific setpieces. For example, DePalma shows his knack for generating sweat-inducing suspense with the elaborate CIA break in halfway through the picture.
Unfortunately, DePalma's penchant for excess does him in on the story. There are too many double-crosses in the plot for this to be construed as clever rather than just maddening.
