The first and best entry in the long-running Mission: Impossible franchise is action-packed and thought provoking. It may take multiple viewings to get a complete grasp on the plot, so it's pretty fortunate that this is a very re-watchable film.

Tom Cruise is in the early stages of a career in action movies, and he helps the film stay compelling without drawing too much attention to himself. M:I has all the ingredients of a clever spy thriller, paving the way for the resurgence of the genre in later years.

The mystery and intrigue of the plot is something the sequels completely lack, and although the story effectively stays grounded and realistic, there are enough elaborate action sequences to keep it exciting.
