Review of Mission: Impossible (1996) by Seth S — 13 Jul 2012
I can kinda get what they were going for here. Some of the scenes are very 1960s Mission Impossible-esque. But the story makes little to no sense, and they made Jim Phelps a villain. Never make Jim Phelps the villain.
After an operation goes wrong and most of Jim Phelps team dies (including Phelps) Agent Ethan Hunt is blamed for their deaths. He then sets a plan in motion to clear his name.
Tom Cruise stars as Ethan Hunt. He is OK here, but gets better as the series goes along. Jon Voight plays Jim Phelps. He is a far cry from Peter Graves, and his character is pretty much ruined by this movie. Ving Rhames plays a member of Ethan's team named Luther. He is exceptional.
Overall, this has some good MI style scenes. But they were just off a little bit with this movie.
