Review of Miss You Already (2015) by Mmadnessgames — 31 Jul 2018
It isn't written particularly well. One scene in particular jumps to mind, in which Collette's daughter says, "You're not dying, are you mummy?" The child actor in this scene is awful. They should have cut it.
Toni Collette is an over-actor. When her characters are having a good time they are always REALLY having a good time. When they're upset, they're always REALLY upset. There is no subtlety to her performance.
Barrymore is kind of the opposite. They don't establish much chemistry throughout the film, despite desperately trying to do so in various overly dramatic scenes and painful montages.
There is zero chemistry between Collette and a very gay-acting/metro-sexual Dominic Cooper.
The scenes between Barrymore and her husband are the best in the film.
I almost made it all the way through. I wanted to turn it off about half an hour in. But, my wife wanted to keep watching and I couldn't be bothered going to the other room. So, I managed to get to the hour-and-a-half mark.
It's not a good film. It isn't directed well. It runs too long. There are various long scenes I would remove... I would probably recast the entire film, except for Barrymore's husband.
The mastectomy isn't handled well. They shove it in our face too much.
