Review of Miss Stevens (2016) by Kathleen W — 05 Jan 2017
'Miss Stevens' is a movie that isn't shy about awkwardness. From classroom drama, to interactions with strangers, to first encounters writer and director Linda Hart and her subjects take us into the world of a 29 year old high school English teacher.
Lilly Rabe plays Miss Stevens who accompanies three students of a class drama competition. From there we don't have much of a movie but there are kernels of something special. Timothee Chalamet who is on of the young actors to watch comes of age here in a roll that is challenging.
He's a high school student who is clearly smart, yet also troubled. While that sounds like the been there done that 1000 times before, Chalamet plays it with mystery and a lack of subtleness. He's a kid and kids show emotions.
While the characters are believable, I could have gone with a little more character development. The secondary storylines come and go, but the primary is riveting yet drawn out. Overall it's a take it or leave it movie that we'll all forget in about 3 months because it doesn't take the chances we want it to in any direction.
Final Score 6.0/10.
