Review of Miss Sloane (2016) by Arjun I — 03 May 2017
''I was hired to win, and I've used whatever resource I have." - Elizabeth Sloane.
A very important question is asked in this film, and that is, "Do people who fight for a cause, believe in the cause? Or do they just love to fight?".
Elizabeth Sloane is one of the most feared and one of the most effective lobbyists in the American political arena. She's ruthless, ambitious and isn't afraid to take on the 'big-boys' and reduce them to sniffling babies. When the gun-lobby approaches her to spearhead their campaign in order to crush a legislation that would inhibit their business, Sloane does the unthinkable. She refuses to represent them, and decides to go and work for the opposition (the campaign for stringent background checks).
What follows is a fast paced political thriller involving Elizabeth Sloane and all the tactics and strategies that she brings to bear in order to do one thing, 'WIN'. Her's is not a character that you can relate to, in fact by the end of the film you're not even sure if you like her all that much. But that is the beauty of the film, because the people obsessed with winning are not likable, nor respectable, they are simply employable. With an excellent star-cast that delivers in spades, and a crisp narrative, Miss Sloane for me sits alongside the great Political Dramas like The American President and The Contender.
