Review of Miss Potter (2006) by Mazur C — 03 Jan 2009
I liked this film better than Finding Neverland, which had much more publicity. It sent a message on a deeper level, but I feel the hardships that Beatrix overcame are a testament to the power of writing, imagination, perseverance, and fate.
Love happens when you least expect it, as does tragedy. The film paints Beatrix Potter as a true public servant. I do wish the film had shown more of these later years when she gave back to her community, and I felt her oppressive mother could have portrayed more vindictively, but Noonan go the point across.
Good plot, good acting (not great). I am a huge Ewan McGregor fan (should be the current James Bond and I'm a little bitter about it) but I feel his character was too good to be true, like we never really knew him that well.
What was he doing while Beatrix was on vacation? Loose ends and average acting kept this film from reaching its full potential but are enough to save it from sappiness.
