Review of Miss Potter (2006) by Seth S — 14 Jul 2012
There isn't anything very compelling about the story of Beatrix Potter. She has one major tragedy in her life, but other than that, there isn't really anything else going on in this story. But what the movie lacks in story it makes up for in charm. But you just can't carry an entire movie on charm.
The story is of Beatrix Potter. She doesn't seem to fit the mold her mother has for her. She wants to write children's books. Her mother thinks this is ridiculous. She also wants to marry the man of her choosing, which her mother also finds ridiculous.
Renee Zellweger plays Beatrix Potter with the same kind of grace that Johnny Depp played J.M. Barrie, she's just not as good an actor. But she does do well, and is charming. Ewan McGregor plays a very reserved Norman Warne, Beatrix's love interest. I commend McGregor for his very good, very subtle performance.
Overall, this is not as good as Finding Neverland. The story just isn't as interesting to me. But it is charming.
"A bunny book to conjure with." 6/10.
