Review of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016) by Toh H — 13 Dec 2016
Having read the book series I was interested to see how they would adapt it into film. I would say that the plot is vastly different from the book, so those who wish to see how the book story on film would be greatly disappointed. The changes were rather interesting and I kinda like it.
Performance by Asa Butterfield was a huge letdown, making the main character boring. He did improve on his performance towards the end, but it was too late to salvage. I feel that Samuel L. Jackson overdid the bad guy character, which felt like a 'cartoon villain'.The rest of the cast were not bad, especially some of the younger actors performance. Villains were too 'cartoony'.
Pacing was a bit rushed but still within acceptable limit, which were partly due to the massive difference from the book. Would have been better if there were more bits between the main character and his parents as there is no dilemma for the main character on his actions.
The action scenes were nothing to be missed and the music is forgettable.
If there ever is a sequel, I do not think I would be terrible interested in it. Since this film 'ended' the story, I think it should remain as such.
