Review of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016) by Jess_Hill — 01 Oct 2016
I'll preface this with the fact that I read the book a few days ago, so the very significant differences between book and film are very fresh, and as such, vastly more annoying. Regardless, this was a disappointing film which, sadly, began with promise.
Green is exceptional as always, but the pacing drags, the rest of the cast are lacklustre, and the second half is abysmal. The character design is well executed, and the visual aesthetic is more restrained and refined than other recent Burton films, which was pleasing to see.
This might be more enjoyable if you haven't read the novel, though I suspect that it wouldn't be by much. 4.
