Review of Miss Julie (2014) by Marilyn J — 13 Nov 2014
Loved it. I didn't mind that it was a bit slow at times - it gave me a chance to truly focus on the acting, the sets, the beautiful attire. I was mesmerized by Jessica Chastain. She lived her part to the fullest, I felt her internal struggle, every mood change, every heartache. And Colin's intensity matched hers perfectly. I can see now why he found this an emotionally exhausting movie. And Samantha Morton was perfection. I loved how much thought Liv Ullmann put into every frame of this movie. So many shots looked like beautiful works of art. She has such a sensitive way of framing her subjects, and in hues that suited each other beautifully.
I will be most surprised if Jessica does not get an Oscar nomination for this one. The development of her character towards the moving climax is exceptional. Loved it. And the subject matter left us with much to discuss about society then and now. And to me, that is the mark of a few hours well spent.
