Review of Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) by Matt L — 23 Aug 2008
The film's fractious handling of the life of a complicated artist is absolutely the right approach. All contributors are at the height of their powers here; it's absolutely Schrader's best film.
Ishioka's sets are incredible, and Bailey's cinematography complements them more than capably, giving the film a supremely polished look. I'm not always the biggest fan of Philip Glass, but his score here is magnificent.
That's enough of my gushing, though; especially now that the new Criterion DVD is coming out, there's simply no reason not to see this.
