Review of Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) by James C — 03 Oct 2009
Not the most elegant production - at times the Glass score becomes invasive and distracting. It has the most remarkable adaptations of four Mishima pieces, though, and tells his story with persuasive force.
It relies quite heavily on the sheer intrigue of the man himself, rather than any skillful interpretation or dramatization. The lead performance is excellent and the final scenes have chilling resonance and bathos.
Leaves one with a great desire to learn more and read some Mishima, and not wholly dissatisfied with the film itself.
