Review of Misery (1990) by Sean S — 28 Sep 2012
Deserving of its praise as one of the best Stephen King adaptations, Misery is a well-written and crafted thriller. Kathy Bates is disturbingly well-suited to her role as obsessed fan Annie Wilkes, and James Caan is fitting as well in his role as the writer of the "Misery" novels, Paul Sheldon.
The elements are all in place to be claustrophobic and have an appropriate amount of thrills, and even to show the situations that can arise when fans go too far. Admittedly the premise is convenient to the character of Annie, living not so far away from Paul's writing cabin and being a former nurse, but it partly contributes to the deranged circumstances the two find--and put--themselves in.
