Review of Misery (1990) by Matt M — 16 Jun 2013
When a famous novelist crashes his car in the middle of a snow storm, he is rescued by a nurse who claims to be his number one fan. But things don't go so smoothly when, upon realising that the man killed off the main character in her Misery serial, she holds him hostage and forces him to bring her back to life in another novel.
Stephen King's novel on fanatism and obsession gets a worthy rendition in this thriller very much dominated by the interaction between the two lead characters played wonderfully by Caan and Bates.
It is thanks to these performances and the claustrophobic setting that the film can boast an original kind of sinister tension and gripping suspense.
