Review of Misery (1990) by Nathan O — 08 Sep 2010
The 1988 Stephen King novel "Misery" is converted into a film. A good one! Rob Reiner (Director of another Stephen King adaption, titled "Stand By Me" which was released in 1986) brings James Caan and Kathy Bates to play the lead roles of Paul Sheldon and Annie Wilkes.
Paul Sheldon, an author who is planning a career change by killing off a fictional character he created in his popular "Misery Series" of books, is caught in a blizzard when returning home. In the heat of the heavy snowfall, he ends up going off the road in a deadly car accident.
Annie Wilkes, a former nurse, saves his life and brings him back to health. As the story progresses, dark secrets are uncovered about the mysterious Annie Wilkes and the friendly recovery Paul Sheldon was experiencing turns into a fight for survival.
"Misery" is craftily created, giving the viewer a good deal of suspense and entertainment. Worthy of praise and worthy of the Academy Award that Kathy Bates won.
