Review of MirrorMask (2005) by Hunter O — 03 Jun 2011
Very much worth seeing, but a terrible disappointment coming from Henson, Gaiman and McKean. The visuals are breathtaking, but it quickly becomes quite obvious that Gaiman had no one to trim the fat and McKean just didn't know how to direct a movie.
Instead of close-ups, cuts and shots that might help pull us into the story, we are forced to look at McKean's (admittedly beautiful) portfolio from afar for an hour and forty minutes made even more sluggish by a script that doesn't know where to stop, start or shut the hell up.
