Review of MirrorMask (2005) by Audrey-Kim H — 28 Sep 2008
A few months ago I saw this and thought it was pretty good. I saw it for the second time tonight, this time on a 42 inch screen (as opposed to the previous 19 inch one). It's much better than I thought! Being a visual film, it really benefits from a decent picture.
I also spotted lots of significant detail that I missed before. I liked it enough to buy the DVD, even the first time round. Now I have the disc, I am sure I'll be watching it a few more times in the future.
There are some bad reviews of this on IMDb, mainly by people who were expecting something different: if you don't understand that it is supposed to be an animated comic, then you can easily tune in to the wrong wavelength and it might leave you cold.
Know to expect a surreal, whimsical world with plenty of allegory and a touch of humour, rather than stunning CGI, a rock soundtrack and OTT action horror, and you'll come away very satisfied.
