Review of MirrorMask (2005) by Colin W — 11 Jan 2009
An excellent fantasy, well designed and presented even if the story is relatively bland and has been done to death in previous tales. In a nutshell its the simple Good vs Evil, light vs dark theme we are all too familar with.
It's only the design and style of the film that lifts it out of the void. Unfortunately it iis dragged further into the mire by so so performances, Stephanie Leonidas and Gina Mckee being the only two who stand out from the entire cast, also the music score is anything but inspiring or thematic, in fact it almost makes your ears bleed.
The film is further overshadowed by production values that clearly has the distinctive British made for TV feel woven through it. If you love dark fantasy you will like this film otherwise it is something best left undiscovered.
