Review of MirrorMask (2005) by Betty W — 22 Mar 2009
The only thing that saves me from giving this movie a horrible review is the ending, or the beginning of the ending at least....when everything "kinda sorta" started to make sense.
Not that I'm saying every film has to be perfectly explained, but there are films who have explained A LOT less and done A LOT better. It's just this movie tried to do too many things at once and it ended up making a mess of a film.
I hate movies that are so incredibly unpurposeful. "Oh, it's about a girl who is emotionally stressed, so she has this dream that perfectly conveys her feetlings and frustrations as plain as day through her gothic and "oh so new" artwork. ".
Oh...that sounds kinda cool.
Lies!
Horrible Garbage.
Pissed me the crap off. And the fact that it was just stolen ideas from Alice In Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz combined didn't help either.
Maybe I just didn''t like the design. Or mabe I know that Alice in Wonderland served a greater purpose than what it appeared to have, because Lewis Caroll was speaking in riddles! Maybe I know that the Wizard of Oz had little real story and was more of an absolute dream and held little of Dorthy's actual life. But this movie..... it just dances around her 15 year old stupid frustrations about her parents. Their isn't one real element of freaking mystery.
Where as, this film...apparently couldn't make up their minds and had to make a nausautingly obvious parallel to her own universe.
God, the ending kinda got better after she took that magic sleeping garbage that made her think she was the black queens daughter....of course I may have only liked it becuase I was finally pleased to not hear her annoying yapper anymore.
