Review of MirrorMask (2005) by Jonathan H — 08 Nov 2009
Neil Gaiman and Dave Mckean are great story tellers with vivid, ( and strange at times) colourful and definitely different imaginations. This film is a brilliant showcase for exactly those things. I've not seen such a bizarre and wondrous fantasy world created in any film.
It reminded me a bit of seeing Neverending Story for the first time as a kid. Everything just seemed bizarre and that is the one word that describes this film perfectly. Special praise has to be given to Stephanie Leonidas as well, she's great in this and engaging to watch.
It has same old kiddie friendly story - child lost in a fantasy world and has to save it to get out again. Overall I thought this movie very different and entertaining, if somewhat bizarre, the amount of invention in it has to be seen to be believed.
Despite it being one for the kids I wouldn't recommend it for young children because it is pretty dark and I think it could well be one of those movies to give kids nightmares.
