Review of MirrorMask (2005) by Tor M — 16 Nov 2012
Wonderfully creative, but I felt very little emotional-connection with the protagonist, who has very little actual personality and is even quite selfish at times. I feel as though Gaiman was trying too hard to make her interesting and individual and instead succeeded in making her completely unrealistic and un-relatable.
The story line left much to the imagination. The characters frequently make huge and improbable 'logical' leaps to solve a situation and this leaves the film feeling empty. Behind all the beautiful visuals and unusual details is just another Alice in Wonderland.
As an 'artistic' film, it's not bad and I quite enjoyed it, if mainly for its dark creativity. However, from a writer such as Neil Gaiman, I have to admit, I was rather disappointed.
Overall, 'MirrorMask' would have been better as a series of art prints at a gallery.
