Review of Mirror Mirror (2012) by Kyle C — 14 Mar 2013
This version of Snow White is appropriate for the entire family, unlike "Snow White and the Huntsman", which came out around the same time. It is spectacularly filmed, with gorgeously breathtaking sets, and stars none other than Julia Roberts as the wicked queen. The queen's advisor, played by Nathan Lane, provides plenty of comedy moments. There is, indeed, a feeling of whimsy and laughter throughout.
I suppose the film stretched just beyond the mediocre for me. It was sweet, but perhaps it doesn't take itself seriously enough. A little too much parody and not enough clout. I think I would have enjoyed it more as a child, and so I kept urging myself to judge it more as a family film and less through the lense of adulthood.
Lily Collins was lovely as Snow White, but I wasn't too keen on Armie Hammer as the prince. He wasn't much of a catch in my opinion! Not at all bad on the eyes, but such an empty-headed dolt! If he was trying to channel Prince Charming from Shrek, he succeeded!
