Review of Miracles from Heaven (2016) by Lovro H — 04 Jul 2016
Miracles from Heaven is a faith-based drama about a family whose one of three daughters has a disease which is uncureable and untreatable. It basically shows what the family goes through, it's nothing really out of the ordinary.
It's also based on "an incredible true story". Now, I didn't have a chance to read about this story just yet, but I certainly will look into it, but this movie felt way too much Hollywoodized.
There are so many situations which you know won't happen in real life that easy. For example, when in Boston, the daughter and her mother are in a restourant and they befriend the waitress there (Queen Latifah, wow) and she offers to give them a tour of the city, a few minutes after she met them.
I highly doubt that would happen anywhere else besides in movies. So, there are many things like this that happen which led me to think this movie isn't entirely based on the true story it's supposed to be based on.
The movie is highly depressing throughout with barely anything happy happening, until the end. But more about the end later... The acting in the movie was great. I'm honestly surprised by the acting.
Jennifer Garner was great as the mother, deffinetely steals the show! The kid actors were mediocre, but that's to be expected. The soundtrack is filled with Christian rock songs, of course, which I didn't mind, but it made the movie cringey at times.
The direction is not really outstanding. It's very generic and colorful. Feels like a TV movie at times, and that's never good. Now, about that ending... That was absolutely horrible. I was going to give the movie a higher rating, but then the ending came and I could barely watch it, it was annoyingly cringey and cheesy.
It was childish and unbelievable. At the end she gets healed by falling off a tree, which is unbelievable, but not entirely. It's possible that the fall could've fixed the nervous system and all that, so that wasn't a problem for me, but the problem was that they gave all the credit to God.
And the girl started saying how she met God and was in Heaven, and it was all very unbelievable. I highly doubt she ACTUALLY met God. Halucinations are possible when you suffer a brain concussion. Anyways, the movie is overall okay.
It's not bad, it's not great. It's an okay drama with some very unbelievable situations and great acting that helps the movie a lot. Would I recommend it, though? Well, the ending does have a good message, even though it's also very preachy at the same time.
I think people of faith would deffinetely love it, others not so much. I'm very open minded when it comes to movies, so I don't judge harshly.
