Review of Miracle on 34th Street (1994) by Dan O — 07 Apr 2010
To be quite honest, I've always prefered this one to the original. Mainly I think this one just has more of a wimsical feeling to it, the majority of the first half of the movie is dealing with wether or not Susan belives in Santa Claus.
In the original, Basicaly from begining to end the focal point of the movie is asking wether or not Kris is insane. Now, of course this is the focal point of the latter half of the remake too, but I just feel like with this one, we are indrouced to a kind, gentle man, who is accused of being insane.
In the original, pretty much from the first scene on, someone is always telling us that "he's insane", so I just kind of believed that. Also, I felt that some of the scenes in this one just worked better than in the original.
Namely, the scene with Kris talking in Dutch to the little girl being replaced with Kris talking in sign language to a deaf girl. I shouldn't even need to explain why that's heartwarming. But of course, the biggest change that I think works in this movie is the court scene.
In the original, Kris is not proven insane because a couple of guys at the post office decided to unload all their useless Santa letters on this guy. In the remake, the court case is won in a much more wimsical way (although I'll admit it is somewhat unrealistic, but hey, it's a movie).
One thing I will say for the original, the romance worked infinatley better. I mean it, the love scenes in the new one are actually painful to watch at times.
