Review of Miracle at St. Anna (2008) by Sheryl L — 01 Mar 2009
A World War 2 movie about Buffalo Soldiers by Spike Lee, it should be a match made in heaven. Instead it's one of the most idiotic, insulting and alarmingly inept movies I've seen in years. For 2008, I'd even put it behind the Love Guru and The Happening....at least those movies, for all their awfulness, didn't offend me as greatly as this piece of shit did.
Everything is wrong with this film. Everything. The script, the acting, editing, direction - all abysmal and it features the worst movie score I've ever heard.
Instead of serving as a tribute to african american soldiers, it degrades them. In fact, to be fair, this movie degrades pretty much everyone involved equally - black, white, American, Italian, German. All painted with the same brush, dripping with incompetence.
The one star I gave this film is for the Tuscan setting which helped (to a degree) to give me something else to look at but the abomination that is this movie. The only miracle in this film is that Spike Lee made it and didn't beat the script writer to a bloody pulp upon reading it.
(See if you want to test your tolerance for pain or want your intelligence insulted non-stop for 2 hours 40 minutes. Jesus.).
