Review of Miracle at St. Anna (2008) by Ed T — 12 Apr 2009

I went into this film, not knowing what to expect. I had heard that it was long and boring. Long it may have been, but boring it was not. MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA, to me, is one of the best pictures ever made about World War II.

Based on a novel by James McBride, this film tells the story of four Arican-American soldiers in Italy during World War II. One of them has a head of a statue that he found, saying it brings him good luck.

This same soldier also takes a little Italian boy with no family and tries to keep him safe. Meanwhile, we see the horrors of the war around them from inside a small Italian village. This is a very powerful film with great performances, beautiful cinematography, exquisite editing, superb sound effects, and plenty of heart-wrenchging moments, along with plenty of hilarious dialogue exchanges.
