Review of Miracle at St. Anna (2008) by Andy W — 01 Jul 2011
Oh dear. The very first line of the film is uttered by an ageing black man watching a John Wayne WW2 movie: "We were there too." Point made. Spike Lee should have cut the film there, and saved us the 2 and an half hour slog through badly scripted dialogue, and a director so insistant on banging a drum with precious little to say.
The story itself is mildly interesting, but its so overly earnest and cringingly naff in places that you'll be praying for a miracle after twenty minutes. Interestingly enough, for a film about black soldiers, whose names are on the DVD cover? John Turturro, Joseph-Gordon Levitt and John Leguizamo - who only appear very briefly in the film's 1983-set bookends.
