Review of Miracle (2004) by Seth S — 24 Jul 2012
One of the best executed sports movies I have seen. Yes, it's a formula movie, but it is a great story, with a great starring performance by Kurt Russell.
The story centers around the USA 1980 Winter Olympics hockey team. Their coach, Herb Brooks has all the odds against him. And the Soviet hockey team is clearly the best team in the running. Brooks must whip his team into shape for their eventual showdown with the Soviets. The movie has great hockey scenes, shot very well by director Gavin O'Connor.
Kurt Russell stars as coach Herb Brooks. What a marvelous job he did. Every sports movie needs its coach figure, and Russell plays one of the best ever, maybe only bested by Gene Hackman in Hoosiers. Instead of getting actors to play the hockey players, they got real hockey player. But surprisingly they are all good actors.
Overall, this is easily one of my favorite sports movies. It really makes you care enough to be happy at the inspirational ending. A real winner.
"Great moments, are born from great opportunity. And that's what you have here, tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game. If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight, WE are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it." 8/10.
