Review of Mio in the Land of Faraway (1987) by Craig R — 17 Jul 2007
So, Harry Potter travels to another galaxy... wait... Harry Potter?! No... it's Mio! Same thing though. Chock up one Russian Koschei, a demon with a heart of stone, with a young orphan who is destined to save the world along with his "faithful companion." Check the following for similarities to Rowling's epic:
1. Orphan boy in England who is mistreated by his uncaring Aunt and Uncle.
2. Missing parents who were/are great heroes.
3. Evil undead dark wizard who gathers an army of bad people to take over the world. Also, whenever his voice is said, a dark wind blows through.
4. An invisibility cloak that allows the prince to sneak through the dark knight's castle.
5. Orphan finds a family in another place, and doesn't return home.
6. Fantasy world is a real place, in another dimension/galaxy.
7. Communication through magical mail between realms.
8. Dark lord has spies everywhere.
9. Kids save the world and defy adults.
10. The trees in the forest are alive and have feelings.
11. Hero has a very special weapon; only it can kill the dark lord.
Rowling, do you have ANY original ideas??
By the way, the inclusion of the pan flutes was really cool. Nice song too.
