Review of Minority Report (2002) by Phillip D — 20 Mar 2015
Minority Report is an extremely well crafted science fiction thriller but ultimately doesn't offer much to the genre or the viewer. Spielberg's style is painfully predictable and the humor breaks seem forced and manufactured.
The world is impressive but also highly derivative, drawing on the earlier in the year Star Wars Episode II as well as a host of other films. The entire car factory chase scene is so reminiscent of dozens of films before it that it ruins the entertainment of the scene completely.
The film is well acted but each character represents a common cliche and their actions are just as predictable, with no true distinguished performance. Ultimately, Minority Report comes off like A.I. as both are films that would have been better suited to Kubrick or Scott, as the stark, dystopian futures and broad philosophical implications just don't jive with Spielberg's personal, intimate filming approach, which is altogether too warm and fuzzy for the situation.
