Review of Minions (2015) by Paris L — 26 Dec 2015
The best part about Minions remains Geoffrey Rush, one of the greatest actors working today. The animation is nice, although not as groundbreaking as Pixar's Inside Out.
Unfortunately, this film fails to actually have a point. So the minions find a master in Scarlett Overkill and then, dont...., then find gru. Right, so the plot is pretty paper thin. Even more worrying is the Minions themselves. One can only tolerate so much gibberish and as expected are far less interesting as main characters.
The only time I ever laughed was early on in the film with the montage of all the bad guys they had killed. The most cringeworthy scene comes when one of the minions goes into a spa with 2 fire hydrants and wears speedos or something and his behind is visible. In fact, that may be the most embarrassing scene in an animated film for the last few years.
Most of the voice work is disposable. Although Sandra Bullock and Jon Hamm are good as S. Overkill and her partner, they really could have been voiced by anyone.
Minions' bright colours and zany energy is what keeps interest then. Otherwise, there is nothing worth recommending Minions on beyond dim-witted family fare.
