Review of Minions (2015) by Ben T — 08 Nov 2015
In my opinion the despicable me franchise is a pretty good franchise but that's it, the first film is very entertaining, very funny and a lot of fun, it isn't groundbreaking but it's a lot of fun.
Despicable Me 2 is an okay follow up, again it's funny, entertaining however it isn't as good as the first but the minions were really funny. While I loved the minions in the first two movies I wasn't sure if they would be able to carry a whole film.
Minions is an okay spinoff, it's very mediocre and flawed but it isn't awful. Unfortunately the minions in this movie aren't that funny. They made me chuckle a couple of times but considering how funny they were in the first two movies they are just alright here.
I think the minions are much better as supporting characters as I don't feel they can really carry a film. This film has a lot of great voice talent however while Sandra Bullock is really good as Scarlet Overkill, the rest of the voice actors are wasted.
Michael Keaton, Jon Hamm and Geoffeey Rish are absolutely wasted. The animation is gorgeous, everything looks brilliant. The music is pretty good, it's the same from the first two movies and it makes a lot of the scenes very entertaining.
The first 15-20 minutes of this film are really good, it was what I wanted the whole film to be. However after that the film slows down and goes from good to alright. This film is also not very funny, I chuckled a couple of times but that's it.
The film is somewhat entertaining but not enough to make me want to watch it again. One of the biggest problems is that the film has a lot of lowest common denominator humour. The jokes are poop jokes and fart jokes, stuff that appeals to kids and no one else.
The climax of this film is pretty good yet predictable and the little minions Bob is very cute but minions is an average movie, that isn't very funny or that entertaining. Considering how much money this movie made its weird considering how sloppy the film is.
This film is alright but I would reccomend this only to fans of the Despicable Me franchise. C+.
