Review of Mindhunters (2004) by Austin B — 20 Nov 2008
Goes back and forth between a dull-by-the -book thriller and a private little masterwork thriller. This was a movie I wanted to see because the previews looked interesting, which is often an unseen red flag.
The movie offers you what you went in expecting, sometimes going beyond that, but mostly staying on proven suspense ground. This might be good for the casual fear fan, but it's not inriguiging enough to the hardcore thriller fans from letting their minds wander, trying to stay a few steps ahead of the director, and in numerous cases succeeding.
But, I did say there are some fine moments in there. The underwater shoot-out in the finale was very stylish done and suspensful as well. The writers magae to create a good set-up where anyone could be the killer and anyon could be the victim.
Nothing is what it seems. If placed in more careful hands (Harlin has a very inconsitent track record), it could become a big thing.
