Review of Mimic (1997) by Robert I — 05 Nov 2007
This is one of those movies that cannot be judged by its cover. I remember seeing this when I was about ten and it scared the piss shit out of me. That's right: PISS SHIT.
Even today it still has that really creepy feeling to it. There was another movie a bit like this that came out around the same time called Starship Troopers. If you've seen that, you know what a goofy piece of shit it is. But this, this is alright. It is genuinely frightening, which is difficult to do with the technology we have today.
I think part of what makes it so good is almost a Hitchcock thing. Most of the movie gives you an extreme feeling of isolation and being trapped.
I would never say that this matches up against any Hitchcock film, but it is working in the same direction. Also the cast is really good. Giancarlo Giannini is pretty cool and lastly I recall some pretty neat camera movements.
You have to take this for what it is: a B horror flick. But this is about as good as B movies get. I would even go so far as to call it a B+/A-.
