Review of Mimic (1997) by Alec B — 02 Mar 2008
The great Guillermo del Toro has said that he loves about an hour of this film, and really doesn't care for the rest. You can tell what in the film was completely his vision, and what was changed by the studio, before it was filmed, so sadly there will not be a directors cut.
Even with that, there is enough to like here. del Toro is a master of mood and he creates some scenes of real grusome terror. I felt the ending almost ruins it because it doesn't seem to fit with the dark tones of everything else.
But the sets and the sounds are creepy, and these giant bugs that take human shape are a great idea. So it works on the level of being a atmospheric thriller, and it is worth seeing for some real scares.
