Review of Mimic (1997) by Gavin M — 30 Jul 2008
Horror thriller from director del Toro, his first Hollywood film, that combines an interesting premise with atmospheric production and a strong cast to entertaining effect. The short story is ultimately stretched quite thinly, and the film sticks firmly to genre routine, never really gripping the viewer at any point; with hindsight, one gets the feeling del Toro was finding his feet here.
Nevertheless his keen eye for horror imagery means there's still plenty to enjoy, whilst the set-pieces do stir up a certain amount of tension. Fun, slightly quirky, but ultimately predictable.
