Review of Mimic (1997) by Kevin R — 28 Oct 2010
Mr. Funny Shoes.
The city of New York hired a group of scientists to develop a high bred beetle that would solve their cockroach problem. The highbred beetle was genetically engineered to die after two years; but instead, it has evolved into something else. One of the scientists responsible for developing the beetle investigates what the beetle has been up to in the three years since it was supposed to die-off.
"They flush them down and we fish them out.".
Guillermo del Toro, director of Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy 1 & 2, Devil's Backbone, and Blade II, delivers Mimic. The storyline for this picture is well thought out and well delivered. The content is fascinating and the characters and bugs are well presented. The cast delivers solid performances for the genre and includes Josh Brolin, Mira Sorvino, Charles Dutton, Giancarlo Giannini, and Jeremy Northam.
"Can I eat it or will it eat me?".
I always loved this movie as a kid. Mimic, Starship Troopers, and Deep Rising were always guilty pleasures that I found myself watching every time they aired. This is a clever film with great directing, acting, and direction. The movie is perfectly paced and a worthy addition to the genre. I strongly recommend seeing this film if you are a fan of the horror genre.
"A piece of shit on the ceiling.".
