Review of Mimic (1997) by Alex R — 04 Aug 2013
If you've seen any of director/screenwriter Guillermo del Toro's work, you know that he loves things that crawl around and go bump in the night. In Mimic, he takes that fascination to it's limits.
Though not as detailed and widespread as his other films, del Toro creates a unique world to place this story into, which proves to be one of the things that separates Mimic from other creature B-horror genre films out there.
The acting isn't anything special and the plot relatively straight forward, but the delicious backstory behind this film is what makes it so captivating. In only his second major motion picture, del Toro's skill at combining CGI and animatronics is already evident, and even though the CGI isn't the best, it gives this movie a very grounded and (can't believe I'm saying this about this film) real realistic feeling to it.
Bottom line, perhaps one of the best of it's kind, I would recommend Mimic to any horror fan.
