Review of Millions (2005) by Daren F — 31 Jan 2009
After seeing Boyle's near masterpiece Slumdog Millionaire I have been wanting to see the rest of his work and Millions seemed like a good place to start. The story involves that of a kind and religious child who finds over 200 thousand pounds and tells his brother and they slowly buy and give away the money.
You find out early on that their mother has died and you slowly learn the point of this touching tale of giving. For being a family film Boyle never compromises his style and visionary quality, this is one of the most visually stunning family films I have ever seen.
Boyle has daring camera work and editing with jump cuts and repeated shots. The story is not dumbed down and no punches are pulled, the film is difficult thematically for kids but Boyle and his writer do not back away they show the difficult scenes and that is why this film works and why I loved it so.
Honestly I was not in love with the film until the last act where the story and the meaning collide and make it a film of greatness.
