Review of Million Dollar Baby (2004) by Jacob F — 22 Jun 2011
I consider Million Dollar Baby my vote for the best movie of 2004. This is because when compared to other sports movies, it's not predictable and it's very personal. It also features terrific performances all-round including Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank, and Morgan Freeman.
Eastwood shows that there is more to him than his tough guy persona by showing his tender side. Swank KO'd the part of Maggie Fitzgerald, showing ambition, strength and poignancy. She was deservingly the champ at the Oscars in my opinion.
Morgan Freeman shows that he definitely has versatility and truly disappears in the character. The relationship between Eastwood and Swank plays as the film's strength as it shows the growing bond between the characters.
The fight scenes are gritty and the low-key lighting portrays the characters' somberness. Overall, Million Dollar Baby is, in short, a knock-out which is superbly acted and tautly directed.
