Review of Million Dollar Baby (2004) by Sumit S — 08 Nov 2012
Some of them make it to the Oscar race for Best Picture. Some of them win (Unforgiven). Some of them don't (Mystic River). Some get critical acclaim (The Bridges of Madison County). Some fall flat on the face (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil).
Having seen all those above mentioned films, I can say that "Million Dollar Baby" is an amalgamation of every nuance and every essence of a Clint Eastwood film--the characters are deeply tragic; the story somewhat anti-climactic; the soundtrack very somber.
His films always have that sense of great loss that somehow never really finds closure (or never given one in some cases). But I guess that's what makes Clint's movies standout. And Million Dollar Baby definitely does that.
I came into the theater expecting a Rocky-esque story with a female lead in it, and that's what I got half way through the film. The second half was quite a surprise to me as I was expecting (without giving anything away for those who haven't seen it yet) "something else".
It does have a beautiful story, mind you, and it was told very well. Acted very well too--the three leads (Clint, Hilary Swank, Morgan Freeman) are so impressively effective they make up for the cheerless tone of the movie, which is not to say the film is boring, because it isn't.
This is a moving, character-driven drama that left me with a feeling of "why-the-heck-did-they-have-to-end-it-like-that". ;o) {I hope this doesn't give hints about anything. hehehe}.
