Eastwood beautifully directs and acts in a film that goes deeper than just boxing. It is an emotional, affecting film, that rides on the back of its performances. Morgan Freeman's Oscar winning performance is the standout in this movie.
He and Clint both gives quietly powerful performances. The screenplay is also good, with dialogue that does more than advance the plot. It gives insight to the characters. It may not reach the level of "Raging Bull", but it is extremely well made.
