Review of Million Dollar Baby (2004) by Anssi V — 10 Oct 2011
While this is a good movie, something about it is a bit off. I just cannot pinpoint what exactly that something is. It isn't the actors, they're great - well, what did you expect from Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman - in Hilary Swank's case, surprisingly so.
Some of the plot twists are a bit rough around the edges, but the story itself isn't that bad - though at some points it feels a bit rushed. The undertones are okay, the side characters are pretty standard - meaning not bad - and the settings are okay as well.
So really, what is there not to like? Well, I don't know, but for some reason I really didn't enjoy this as much as I could have had that something not been there bothering me. Perhaps it's just that the movie tries to be so realistically and cleanly told that it loses something along the way.
Actually, the word clinical is perfect to describe this film. It's a good film and you should watch it, but it's still a bit clinical.
