Review of Million Dollar Baby (2004) by Rameshwar N — 30 Jan 2012

I guess there is a predetermined format to make sports movies, especially the one on ones. They start the same, goes through similar twists and turns before they predictably conclude. But how are there so many good ones? Well firstly everyone appreciates and pays attention to the triumph of human spirit, most of the movies bank on that anyways. Then you have the scripted to please you game of whatever, pure entertainment. This movie takes advantage of all the above and transcends to another level just because of superior performances.

Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) is an aspiring boxer and is running out of time as she is pushing 30. Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood) is a decorated coach but just got dumped by his best boxer. They both cross paths and Frankie reluctantly brings Maggie under his wing and ends up learning a thing or two about attitude and spirit from her.

The movie does rides on a lot of clichés and old school emotions, but the same simplicity and clarity makes this a fine watch. Features excellent performances by the trio especially Hilary Swank with a breakthrough one. Also is well written on some level with memorable quotes and peppy one-liners.

It sure is just another sports drama, but one hell of a one at that.
